Chinese Tones:

1st tone - level at the same pitch (don't forget to pitch it high enough!)

2nd tone - rises, starting from a mid pitch (intonation is similar to that in English questions)

3rd tone - dips, starting from a mid pitch, dropping low, then rising to mid

4th tone - falls (starts from the highest pitch and drops right down to the lowest point - as if in short commands)

Initial consonants f-, l-, m-, n-, h-, s-

[f] - as in "food"

[l] - as the first "l" in "legal", but the tongue tip should be slightly further forward

[m] - as in "mood"

[n] - similar to an English "n", but the tongue tip should be a bit further forward

[h] - as in "hood", but with a little friction.

[s] - similar to English "s", but the tongue tip should be slightly further forward. Some people place the tongue tip behind the lower teeth.
